Thumbs up for Walking
Why walk?
Walking is a wonderful way to de-stress and shake off the tensions and frustrations that accumulate in our hectic daily lives. It clears the head and entices you to pause from the demands placed on you. With stress rolling off your shoulders, a sense of well-being and lightness expands in its place, a reprieve that quite literally recharges your batteries.
And as your body benefits from every step, you are also at leisure to observe your surroundings, listen to the birds, feel the sun on your skin, notice the smells around you – in short, enjoy the moment! At Health Holidays Yukon, we focus on bringing the joy of walking into your life.
Even notorious couch potatoes will find it easy to take up. But walking is not just beneficial as an introductory level exercise program. Regularly done, it builds up strength, muscles and overall fitness, which in turn enable you to walk longer distances, step up the pace and burn more fat.
Your metabolism also receives a boost from walking: not only do you burn more calories on the go, but your metabolic rate remains elevated afterwards, sometimes for hours, depending on your exercise level. During that time you continue to burn extra calories – a nice bonus to help with weight control. And as a result of increased activity, you will experience sounder sleep, another welcome spin-off.
Make walking part of your daily routine, and you may quickly become addicted – one of those rare addictions that even doctors encourage!
You can walk almost anywhere and at any time - all you need is a pair of comfortable and sturdy walking shoes. Getting together with a friend or family member on a walk makes it even more enjoyable for many people than “going it alone”.
Research indicates that walking and other moderate physical activities for a minimum of 30 minutes on 5 – 7 days a week can positively impact your health in many ways.
These health benefits include:
- Managing and maintaining body weight
- Improving your blood pressure and blood sugar levels
- Decreasing your risk of heart disease
- Reducing LDL (the bad) cholesterol
- Lowering your risk of stroke
- Diminishing your risk of type 2 diabetes
- Decreasing your risk of breast and colon cancer
- Strengthening muscles, bones, and joints
- Lowering your risk of osteoporosis
- Boosting your feeling of well-being
